project : graduation dress

She loved it and looks so beautiful!

Back in January I was asked by a classmate graduating with my sister if I would be willing to do her graduation dress for her.  I was honored!  She told me she had her eye on a wedding gown by J Crew, and we both decided we liked everything about the dress so I would replicate it.  The original gown runs for $900 so I wanted to select fabrics that would imitate the silks used for the dress but with a more affordable cost and comfortable wear for the 80+ degree weather we had that day!  The gown features a ruched front and back with a boneless bodice for comfort, an inset waistband, a bow-style strap, and floor-length gathered skirt.

The base fabric for this dress is a textured taffeta (though without the usual stiffness), and then the bodice, bow, strap and skirt are of a yoryu chiffon.
