designer : the knit kid

Knitwear is in a strange place. If you browse knitwear patterns online, you feel like you've been transported back to the 1970s or 1990s and can never escape. But then if you find yourself on Sandra Backlund's site viewing her portfolio, you think knitwear has a chance - but it's still too experimental for everyday wear.

When my friend Elyse texted me this morning asking if I had heard of this Etsy designer, I was beyond excited to see modern, fashion forward and wearable knits that are as beautiful as they are minimal and clean - not overly fussy, covered in too many techniques - just speaking for themselves.

Just simple enough not to scream "my grandma made this for me" - the clean lines, color blocking, and fresh hues erase any sentiment of that.

Gorgeous!

obsession : matthew williamson fall 2011 rtw

I have a new favorite designer, because of this collection.

Inspired by Russian artist Francisco Infante-Arana, Williamson combined geometric prints with beads, lamb, ombre, and patchwork wool to create a vibrant and fresh fall collection.  I love everything about those prints, and how wearable (and cozy) some of the separates look.  Recently I've been loving those Pendleton-type wool blankets with the native geometric squares and triangles in bright colors.

I am trying to gather inspiration for tailoring - I will go fabric shopping this weekend.  I intend to do some serious bead work on my coat (I know, I know) and I also want to design the outfit to be worn with the coat, so it goes down the runway as a complete look.  I'll give you a sneak hint: the stingray as inspiration.

Though if I find some native print wool, that may replace it.

designer : hussein chalayan fall 2011

It isn't very often that coats impress me, possibly because I don't yet know the work that goes into tailoring or because I am not a coat person myself.  But while on WGSN and trying to gather inspiration for tailoring in the fall, and after getting some ideas, decided to hop onto Style.com and check out some fall collections which heavily include coats and jackets.  I looked at more of the experimental designers, and remembered Henry mentioning Hussein Chalayan over and over again for me to familiarize myself with as inspiration.  Henry, as always, was right.

Quite simply amazing.

Now I have to make a difficult decision: do I make a coat that is wearable, something that I might be able to use myself?

Or maybe conceptual Rachel might take over.  My fascination for experimental design has been reignited after the McQueen exhibit, and I dare say if I could design conceptual things for the rest of my life I'd be a very happy person.  Maybe I can create a happy fusion of the two.

That being said, my inspiration for tailoring at the moment is the cocoon.  Whether to take that to the extreme and do something engulfing the human body (or build irony into the package by making something huge and snuggly but horribly restrictive to movement, as butterflies, after all, are stuck inside) or something more along the lines of comfort is to be decided at a later time.

At work today I researched other bridal designers' online portfolios to gather inspiration for Sam on her own portfolio.  I couldn't resist posting about Caroline - her use of texture is just impeccable.
